Front Yard Landscaping Ideas For Home Landscape Design

Front yard landscaping designs incorporate different things than backyard designs, because you have to take into account things like the driveway, front door entrance and pathways. Every element adds to the overall effect, so here are some elements to consider working with.

Your driveway actually has a lot to do with your front yard landscape. Whether it is beside your front yard, or if it is an arc leading to your front door, make a big difference. Also, if you want to go with a more rustic feeling, you can use crushed granite or gravel for your driveway instead of paving it.

Front Yard Landscaping Ideas

You could also choose fancier front yard landscaping ideas like brick or travertine pavers, in which case you can create a design in the paving. You also want to consider driveway edging, especially if you have opted for loose stone for your driveway, and this could be achieved with designed blocks or even large natural stones.

Walkways

Landscaping walkways is an essential part of your design, and there are many options to consider. You first want to think of how wide you want it to be, as well as where it leads to and how far it goes. Will it just reach the driveway or the garage, reach the street, or meet up with a path leading to the backyard?

You will also want to decide if it will be straight or curved, as it will help determine the material you choose to create a different feeling. If it's a minor path, you may even prefer stepping stones with low growing plants in between to a proper pathway. Walkway landscaping materials can be granite, brick, concrete, bluestone or natural stones, depending on the look and price you want. You again should consider rock or flower edging if they appeal to you.

Planting Designs

Garden design plans in the front yard are not as extensive as in the backyard, and so it is one aware some people go wrong in. You need to think about the plants you choose and how high they will grow, to avoid blocking any doors, paths or windows. Trees, shrubs or bushes are nice choices as long as you understand your lighting conditions and space.

If you want flowers and have a sloped area, building landscaping retaining walls is a good idea, and then you can plant flowers at the top or at the base of them. If you prefer less hassle, try a rock garden or even strategically placed landscaping rocks to catch your eye but not be overbearing.

You don't want to overdo your front garden because it can be overwhelming and too busy to the eye, so you have to carefully consider what you will place and where to achieve the balanced look you want. There are many front yard landscaping ideas out there, but match them to the space you have and the feeling you want to achieve, and don't try to incorporate everything.

How to Build a Door

By Peter Ackerson
Building a door can be a labor of love or just plain labor if it is to be just a utility door. A utility door is constructed to perform the simple task of keeping people in or out or somewhere. Beauty is of no concern. An architectural door on the other hand could range from a hand hammered copper finish to solid Brazilian mahogany finely carved door to a plain faced solid oak panel door. All require a great deal more labor to build than a utility door.
