A focal point simply means having a central area that draws the eye. This can be something like a gazebo, tree, pergola, rock grouping or water feature. Building up one focal area instead of spreading out some elements all over the backyard is much cleaner and more organized and takes little effort to maintain.

Backyard Landscaping Ideas

Water

Water in the backyard can come in two forms: either you have enough space to put in a swimming pool, or you can add a small pond or even a waterfall. If you have a swimming pool, spruce it up by doing some swimming pool landscaping. Add lighting, trees or a pathway leading to your pool to make it beautiful as well as functional.

If you don't, consider adding a small pond. This can be dug out and laid in without too much difficulty, as long as you have the right lining and materials, and you can even incorporate some river rock landscaping around it to make use of polished rocks to add to the natural appeal of the water.

Patios

If you already have a patio in your backyard, enhance it by changing the furniture, adding water features, or incorporating plants or flowers on the patio. If you don't, there are some great patio landscaping ideas you can follow to create a patio with different stones, different shapes and sizes and incorporating different features, like a fire pit or hot tub.

Rock Gardens

If you don't have the greenest thumb, but you want to create a beautiful space, consider building a rock garden. These backyard landscape ideas can look very rustic and natural, depending on the rocks you choose, and you can layer them up like a wall, or even choose only a few boulders as eye catchers.

If you want to enhance this backyard landscape design with a little color, you can plant a few flowers or shrubs within the rock garden for minimum maintenance.

There are many back yard landscaping tricks you can implement to make a quick change to your space. They could involve different furniture items or focal points, or they might demand a bit more in terms of water features or building patios. Backyard landscaping ideas come in all difficulty levels, so even an untrained amateur can create a beautiful space.

How to Build a Door

By Peter Ackerson
Building a door can be a labor of love or just plain labor if it is to be just a utility door. A utility door is constructed to perform the simple task of keeping people in or out or somewhere. Beauty is of no concern. An architectural door on the other hand could range from a hand hammered copper finish to solid Brazilian mahogany finely carved door to a plain faced solid oak panel door. All require a great deal more labor to build than a utility door.
